NATHAN DAVIS

broad street

lyrics and music by Nathan Davis

I can see from your eyes that you're a wild one.
They tell me you burn your days straight into nights,
And I'll bet money on it you'll be like this forever.
Every note you play gives you a little light.

Feel the saxophone breathing blue notes;
Makes you smile but down inside you weep.
You know it hurts to play something that hits you like a fist
Til the darker side of you puts you to sleep.

Doing time on Broad Street,
Looking for a miracle to eat,
Walking miles on tired feet
Won't get you anywhere or anything you need—
Down on Broad Street.

The crowd starts thinning out around midnight;
They've been drinking here since early afternoon.
You just empty every bottle til you're starving;
Seems like the thing to do in this medicated room.
What do they care if you're tired?
Sometimes the jukebox gets more courtesy.
You find shelter in the alleyways,
Memories of yesterdays
Locked inside a cell you share with me.

Doing time on Broad Street,
Looking for a miracle to eat,
Walking miles on tired feet
Won't get you anywhere or anything you need.

We've been walking these roads for a long long time, my friend.
They've been leading us down to a bitter end.
No matter what we learn still they never win.

Doing time on Broad Street,
Looking for a miracle to eat,
walking miles on tired feet
Won't get you anywhere,
Now, anywhere but Broad Street
Looking for a miracle to eat,
Walking miles on tired feet
Won't get you anywhere or anything you need—
Down on Broad Street.

Recorded at Overdub Lane in Durham, NC, Nathan was not entirely happy with the results. We considered stripping the recording down to the bare vocals and Nate's guitar and re-doing it, but decided ultimately to leave it alone. We think John Henry Trinko's keyboard in this recording is just great like it is.
